Hi I’m Summer
I am a self taught artist who lives in the beautiful Australian state of Tasmania. My art journey has been shaped by my love and passion for the natural environment, and expresses my own personal experiences, appreciation, and knowledge of the natural world.
The more I explore being an artist as an adult the more I realise how much I loved making art in my youth. From being excited to receive craft supplies as a child at Christmas (nothing has changed by the way), to spending hours walking through art galleries during my young adult/ university years, it’s obvious I have always had a love for art and creating.
I started making art for myself; like a form of meditative journaling. I began sharing with family and friends, and now I want to share with community. For me, being an artist started as a drive to rediscover playfulness as an adult, and has become a self-therapy to heal from past trauma and illness. When I create my mind becomes quiet; no overthinking or PTSD, just me and my art materials.
Creating art from mixed media is a bit of a nod to my environmental science days. I enjoy exploring and experimenting; allowing materials to interact and react, leaving many layers and textures that reflect my own language, self-expression, and experience of this world.
Welcome to my story and I look forward to inviting you into my community and art space.
How the studio got its name
Pandani Studio started as an escapist frame of mind before evolving into a physical art space with an old wooden table and some watercolours my husband gifted me.
One day whilst walking along the Ronny Creek boardwalk at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, I decided to turn my mindscape into a reality. Mesmerised by the Pandani’s (Richea pandanifolia) trailing along the creek; the wind chime like sounds coming from their rustic layers of old leaves; I felt they perfectly symbolised my dream - art created from layers of media and ideas, reflecting a deep connection to nature, especially the Tasmanian landscape.
A lot of the time I make art outside in the surroundings that inspire a piece. With a kit of materials in hand wherever I adventure to Pandani Studio comes with me.
